About Us
Volunteer State Community College is a public, two-year, college offering associate degrees, certificates, continuing education, and service to northern Middle Tennessee. It is located in Gallatin, Tennessee, which is 30 miles northeast of Nashville. There are also degree granting centers at McGavock High School in Nashville and Vol State at Livingston in Overton County. Vol State at Highland Crest offers dozens of day and evening classes each semester in Springfield. Numerous other off-campus operations extend the College's instruction and public service roles throughout its 12 county area of: Clay, Davidson, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Robertson, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale and Wilson counties.
Popularly known as Vol State, the college has a diverse mix of students ranging in age from teens to senior adults. They come from counties across the service area, many states around the nation, and more than 25 countries. Vol State has more than 70 programs in five grand divisions: Humanities, Social Science and Education, Allied Health, Business, and Math and Science. The college also offers classes for the community, and area businesses, through the Division of Continuing Education and Economic Development.

Volunteer State Community College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award the Associate Degree and certificates. The College has eligibility certification by the U.S. Office of Education and is approved by the State Department of Education for Veterans Education.
The College is an Equal Opportunity Institution of Higher Learning of the Tennessee State Board of Regents and maintains an “open-door” policy of accepting any student who desires to improve through education. A Faculty Assembly offers the faculty opportunities to become involved in decision making on an advisory level. The assembly is designed to improve communications between the faculty and administration and to express collective faculty opinion on issues of concern. The assembly is chaired by a speaker who is chosen from the body by the elected divisional representatives.
