Job Description:
SUMMARY OF POSITION
Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for the collection of patient specimens for laboratory testing. This is executed by following proper guidelines for safe handling of blood, body fluids and hazardous chemicals, properly recording lab testing, quality control and assurance, assisting physicians with procedures and exams as requested, maintaining appropriate inventory levels of reagents and supplies.
1. Makes sure all lab reports are reviewed and panic values are noted.
2. Demonstrates ability to perform clean venipunctures.
3. Demonstrates ability to perform capillary collections.
4. Follows proper guidelines for safe handling of blood, body fluids and hazardous chemicals.
5. Demonstrates knowledge of procedures and practices
6. Performs laboratory testing and operates automated equipment within the limits described in the procedure manual.
7. Maintains proper records of laboratory testing and results as described in the policy and procedures manual.
8. Demonstrates understanding of proper quality control procedures, use of control materials, and documentation of QC results and corrective action.
9. Demonstrates knowledge of ongoing quality assurance activities in the office and documents breaches of quality as they occur.
10. Demonstrates ability to perform routine maintenance on automated equipment.
11. Performs well in laboratory proficiency surveys.
12. Assists physicians with procedures and exams as requested.
13. Maintains appropriate inventory levels of reagents and supplies.
14. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify Director or Manager.
15. Must be able to document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from laboratory’s established performance specifications.
16. Be able to document in charts for “lab only” visits.
17. Have complete understanding of LIS; which includes ordering test, rejecting test, reviewing and approving results.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Able to lift up to 50 pounds
Able to travel to satellite clinics
Able to keep up with the office pace
Able to bend /stoop frequently
Able to stand for long periods of time
Job Requirements:
Current State of Tennessee Medical Laboratory Technician License &/or several years’ extensive experience in a laboratory setting as a Medical Assistant (CMA or RMA)
Hematology experience - minimum (2) years of laboratory experience
Knowledge of reading CBC results & when to question & repeat the test
Excellent phlebotomy skills
