A Welcome
From The President

On behalf of our faculty, staff, and the college administration, I’d like to welcome you to Volunteer State Community College. This fall semester marks our 36th year of providing quality, accessible higher education and workforce training to northern middle Tennessee. By choosing to attend Volunteer State, you’ve joined a diverse and growing population of individuals who have decided to make their lives and their communities better. You’ve also chosen to attend a college that is fiercely committed to excellence, as proven by the honors bestowed on your fellow classmates.

For the second year in a row, one of your Volunteer State classmates has won the Phi Theta Kappa New Century Scholar Award for Tennessee. Only one outstanding student qualifies in the entire state. And the fact that the New Century Scholar has been a Vol State student for the past two years is a tremendous testament to your potential while attending our college.

Other significant student accomplishments include The Pioneer, receiving second place in the “Best Magazine” division of the 2005 Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 12 Mark of Excellence Awards; Squatter’s Rites placing second in the American Scholastic Press Association annual magazine competition; and the Second Year Radiologic Technology Students winning both first & second place in the Tennessee State Radiology Society Student Bowl last fall.

But teaching, guiding and helping you succeed involves more than education. Your environment must also be comfortable and accommodating. For those of you in Livingston, you are the first to attend classes in our brand new, 18,000 square foot facility. We hope you are as excited to be a part of this momentous year as we are excited to finally make this long awaited dream a reality.

Another change you’ll notice this year at our Gallatin campus is our newly renovated cafeteria. We hope that this area will not only provide a comfortable place for you to relax and visit with friends, but that it will also be your internet café, complete with wireless capabilities.

And for those of you who manage to find time for distance learning classes while juggling work, home, and family responsibilities, I applaud your determination. While you may not spend time with us in physical classrooms, your academic contributions to Vol State make all of our experiences here that much richer.

We also have new degree and certificate offerings this year, one of which is the Associate of Science in Teaching degree. If you plan to become an elementary school teacher, this degree option will transfer to any public university in Tennessee. Another new certificate program is the Medical Transcription Certificate which will be offered during the evenings this fall. It will prepare students to enter this rapidly growing career field and provide the knowledge and skills necessary for the national Certified Medical Transcription exam.

While a list of “new and improved” things at Volunteer State could go on and on, I challenge you to devote your attention to only one of those things…you. You’ve made a courageous decision to pursue a college education because you felt a need to learn more, do more, and be more. Our goal at Volunteer State is for you to feel new and improved after spending some time with us in this academic community. I wish you the very best during your time here.

Sincerely,

Dr. Warren R. Nichols
