The Communication: Journalism area of emphasis at Volunteer State Community College may lead students to either an Associate of Science degree or an Associate of Arts degree. Upon graduation, students with a journalism emphasis have a solid foundation in journalism which they may continue to pursue academically or develop professionally.

In addition to the general education courses, students receive an introduction into the field of journalism, including the opportunity to work on the college’s student newspaper and/or magazine.

The courses students take while earning their degree are Survey of Mass Communication (COM 110), Introduction to Journalism (COM 101), Reporting for Print Media (COM 102), Media Advertising and Sales (COM 201), Introduction to Public Relations (COM 240) and a practicum with either The Settler, the Vol State student newspaper, (COM 292P) or The Pioneer, the Vol State student magazine (COM 293P). And, students, depending on their field of interest, take an additional six hours of electives.

Vol State graduates with a Communication: Journalism emphasis have excelled in both the academic and professional journalism communities. They serve as editors, reporters, photographs, and advertising salespeople in both college and professional publications.
