Welcome to the News and Activities Page of the Department of Communication Web site. I think this is an especially important page as it highlights many of the activities our students and faculty engage in during the academic year. I strongly believe that student and faculty involvement in opportunities outside the classroom are critical components to a well-rounded education based in the Humanities and Sciences. Please feel free to contact us if you have suggestions for or additions to this calendar. And again, welcome to Vol. State and the Department of Communication. -LA

Vol State Students Recipients of State Award
The Office of Disability Services is pleased to announce that Vol State students are the recipients of State Awards.
TN-AHEAD (Tennessee Association of Higher Education and Disabilities) will award the Outstanding Student Award to Kristy Shaw. This award honors a currently enrolled student with a disability whose academic achievement, participation in student activities, and disability advocacy have created positive disability awareness and have helped dispel traditional myths regarding disabilities. Kristy is currently the President of the Challenges Club, active in SGA, works for the YMCA, and is on track to graduate this year. Kristy has overcome great obstacles and will be the first college graduate in her family. Kristy is a wonderful young lady and is very deserving of this recognition.
The Media Award will be presented to The Pioneer magazine editor, Jennifer Easton and The Settler newspaper editor, Carollei McMillin. This award recognizes a media source that has brought worthy attention to disability issues or that has promoted positive awareness of the abilities and contributions of persons with disabilities. The Student Publication Center makes a tremendous effort every semester to cover all activities, events, and individual students. We are proud of the work they do and are blessed to have them working with us. This is a credit to their profession and provides a glimpse of their future accomplishments.
Vol State received 2 of the 4 awards presented state wide. The presentations will be made April 2, 2004 at the TN-AHEAD Conference held at the Marriott Courtyard, Nashville. This is a tremendous coup for Vol State.

National Recognition for Department Chair Assante
Leonard Assante, Associate Professor of Communication and Department Chair has been nominated for inclusion in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” This is professor Assante’s 2nd nomination. Less than 2% of all teachers in the United States are multiple recipients of this honor. Only former students who are represented in “The National Dean’s List” may nominate teachers for this award. Assante feels especially honored since the nomination is made by students not peers or administrators. Assante was previously nominated in 2002.

Facilities Updates
Tennessee Board of Regents preliminary approval has been received to begin design of a new Humanities Building. The new building will be constructed in the area behind the Campus Center near the Thigpen Library. It will house a new theatre, offices, classrooms and labs for the Communication Department as well as other departments in the Humanities Division. We expect completion of the new building in the next 5-10 years. In the Summer of 2000, a committee of faculty and staff in the division, including Len Assante in Communication, developed initial plans and specifications for the new building. All programs housed in the department will benefit from the new building, which will be the largest on campus and designed as the campus "show piece".
