Each of the Curriculum Guides address an Area of Emphasis in Communication.  Each Guide lists the Required General Education Courses and the Recommended Area of Emphasis Courses.  Click on one of the links below.


Transfer Equivalency Guides
 Select the Volunteer State Community College Transfer Equivalency Guides page for a review of approved course equivalencies between VSCC and the universities listed on the page.  Universities included are:  Austin Peay State University, East Tennessee State University, Middle Tennessee State University, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University, University of Memphis, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, University of Tennessee at Martin, and Western Kentucky University.
             
When used in conjunction with the current catalog from the transfer institution and advice from your academic advisor, this list will help you determine which degree requirements you have completed and which courses you need for graduation.  These Equivalency Guides allow the reader to compare courses in, both Communication, and other discipline areas, as well.

Activities

A variety of activities are available for communication majors to become involved in practical applications of communication studies and to network with other communication majors and communication professionals.

Activities have been created to make a student's educational experience exciting, practical, and valuable, as each student develops a portfolio of skills that employers want.  Practica are available for all courses of study. 

Pioneer Forensic Team

General Communication and Speech and Forensics majors may participate as a part of the
Pioneer Forensics Team and enter intercollegiate competition in any one or several of 10 individual events or parliamentary team debate.  Contact Dr. Dawn Larsen, Edmon Thomas or David Johnson.

Hal R. Ramer Oratorical Contest

Any student may participate in the Annual Hal R. Ramer Oratorical Contest.  Speakers deliver prepared speeches on a variety of topics for cash prizes and awards.  Contact Dr. Dawn Deveaux

WVCP FM Radio

Telecommunications students program and operate
WVCP-FM, the campus radio station and gain experience in video and television production.  Contact Howard Espravnik

The Settler Newspaper

THE SETTLER, The Settler, Volunteer State Community College’s student newspaper, offers students the opportunity to learn by doing. As a member of The Settler staff, students may learn a variety of newspaper-related skills- writing, editing, photography, advertising sales, layout, and design. While on staff, students may also receive academic credit hours (one, two or three credit hours per semester) by registering for COM 292P. The class is among the college’s practicum courses, offering students a hands-on learning experience. Students may also serve on the newspaper staff without registering for the class.

The Settler is a tabloid newspaper produced entirely by students. The newspaper is published six times a semester. It provides the Vol State community with news, sports, opinions, and entertainment. An online version of The Settler is also available at www.volstate.edu/settler.

The Pioneer Magazine

The Pioneer, Volunteer State Community College’s student magazine, provides students a hands-on educational experience while producing a full-color magazine. As a member of The Pioneer staff, students may learn a variety of magazine-related skills- writing, editing, photography, advertising sales, layout, and design. As a member of The Pioneer staff, students can also receive academic credit hours (one, two or three credit hours per semester) by registering for COM 293P. The class is among the college’s practicum courses, giving the students the opportunity to learn by doing. Students may also serve on the magazine staff without registering for the class.

The Pioneer is a full-color, glossy magazine produced entirely by students. The magazine is published once each fall and spring semester. It provides the Vol State community with news, features and photographs of the activities of the campus, students, faculty, and staff. Sigma Chi Eta

SIGMA CHI ETA, a national honor society for all communication majors, is composed of communication majors who have completed a minimum of 3 courses or 9 hours in communication studies.  Students must have maintained a minimum GPA standard in the communication courses and a minimum overall GPA standard for all courses.  SIGMA CHI ETA is associated with the National Communication Association.  Contact Shellie Michael

Phi Rho Pi

Phi Rho Pi is a national honor society for speech competitors in two-year colleges in the United States.  Contact Dr. Dawn Larsen

Alpha Sigma Iota

Alpha Sigma Iota is an organization for broadcasting majors that provides opportunities for experience, such as field trips and workshops.   Contact Howard Espravnik
