Computer Competency Requirement

Volunteer State Community College | Student Services Division

Demonstrated Computer Competency Is A Graduation Requirement!

All degree-seeking students must demonstrate a required level of computer competency before they graduate, and it is strongly suggested that such proficiency be demonstrated within the first 15 credit hours of coursework. This can be done in 2 ways:

  1. By taking and passing the course CIS100 - Computer Technology And Applications.
  2. By taking and passing the Computer Competency Exam (CCE).

Volunteer State Community College requires that all degree-seeking students are computer literate.   A certain level of computer competency is necessary for success both at Volunteer State and beyond.

The Course:
CIS 100 - Computer Technology And Applications

CIS 100 Microcomputer Technology and Applications (3) An introduction to microcomputers and application software. Students will gain familiarity with microcomputer hardware, operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software and the Internet. The course provides extensive hands-on experience and satisfies the Volunteer State computer competency requirement.

The Exam:
Computer Competency Exam (CCE)

Students who are interested in the CCE should first perform an initial self-assessment to see whether or not they are good candidates for the CCE.   This self-assessment lists all the skills that are required for the exam as well as information about taking the practice exam. Practice CDs may be picked up in the Wood Campus Center, Room 217. Practice CDs are not mailed. After this self-assessment, the student will be able to make an informed decision of whether to take the CCE or take the course, CIS 100. You are strongly encouraged to click here review the self-assessment online.

After this self-assessment, any student who believes that they already possess the necessary level of computer competency may opt to take the Computer Competency Exam by contacting the Testing Center at 615-230-3484 or come by the Wood Campus Center, Room 217, at Volunteer State Community College.
