The State of Tennessee's EMT Extended Skills Curriculum is a 40 hour course that prepares EMT-Basics to perform advanced skills including: In addition, the Extended Skills Curriculum is designed for persons seeking reciprocity in Tennessee.

This course is offered at Volunteer State Community College in a variety of formats to meet the needs of course participants and consists of 40 hours of didactic material with an additional 10 hours of clinical experience.

Reciprocity Course Requirements:

The current course cost is $325.00, class meets daily 8:30 am – 4:30 pm for a total of 40 hours didactic. You must complete a 10 hour clinical rotation immediately after the one week lecture. The rotation is 9:00 am – 7:00 pm at Metro General Hospital ER, you will choose the day of attendance to begin immediately after the one week lecture and we will then notify the ER charge nurse.

There are some requirements prior to clinical:

  1. Submit a medical statement signed by your physician…this form will be mailed to you upon initial enrollment.
  2. Submit for a background check…a list of vendors be will provided to you upon registration with a deadline date noted of when to submit for the background check.
  3. Verify liability coverage or obtain coverage…you will receive a vendor name that can assist you in this area.
  4. Submit 50% deposit of payment no later than 2 weeks prior to class to confirm reserved seating for the registration submitted. Balance of course fees are due no later that Day 1 of the course.

Additional fees you may incur other than course fee are as follows:

Background check: $73.00 (depending on vendor of choice)

Clinical Liability Insurance: $49-149 (depending of vendor and current licensure status - EMT, Paramedic etc.)

Medical Statement: Varies depends on the need a current physical examination

State Licensure: $150 (If Upgrade IV status only and currently licensed in the State of Tennessee) $250 (if obtaining licensure by Reciprocity transferring from another state)

*Testing for licensure by the State EMS Division is usually scheduled within one month after course completion.

*Advise: Visit the State EMS website Reciprocity link to determine additional requirements by the State for licensure (i.e. National Registry requirements, documentation from State in which you are transferring from etc.).
