The following computer workstation checklist will help you to identify some important risk factors that can contribute to work-related discomfort or problems.  Place a check by the answers that apply Most of the time.   Return to Health Services – C-206A

Monitor

1.      Is the monitor screen directly in front of you?

 

 

2.      Is the screen approximately an arm distance?  (18-30 inches)

 

 

3.      Can your elbows swing freely without obstacles?

 

 

4.      Are your eyes even level with the top of the screen or 2-3 inches below the top of the monitor?  (Lower is better for bifocals)

 

 

5.      Do you find yourself raising or lowering your chin to view the screen?

 

 

6.      Is your monitor slightly tilted upward?

 

 

7.      Do you use a document holder next to your monitor rather than laying papers flat?

 

 

8.      Do you have any reflections from windows or light that may cause you to squint?

 

 

9.      Is there sufficient light for reading without straining your eyes?

 

 

10.  Is the brightness on your monitor equal to the area behind it?

 

 

11.  Do you take 20 second breaks every 20 minutes and look at least 20 feet away?

 

 

Keyboards

1.      Do you use and adjustable under-the counter keyboard/mouse tray?

 

 

2.      Are the home row keys on your keyboard positioned directly in center of your trunk?

 

 

3.      Is the keyboard located just above the level of your lap?

 

 

4.      Is the keyboard tilted slightly downward?  (negative keyboard tilt)

 

 

5.      Is the mouse located on the same level as your keyboard?

 

 

6.      Are your wrists in a neutral position?

 

 

7.      Do you feel any strain or pull in the wrist area?

 

 

8.      Are your shoulders relaxed?

 

 

9.      Do you feel a strain or pull in the neck or shoulder area?

 

 

10.  Are your elbows at a 90-110 degree angle and close to your sides?

 

 

11.  Are your wrists pressing down on a hard surface or pads while typing?

 

 

12.  Are you holding the mouse loosely with your hand and fingers in a relaxed position when moving the pointer around the screen?

 

 

Chair

1.      Is the height of your chair adjusted so that your feet are positioned flat on the floor or on a footrest?   Hips and legs at a 90-degree angle?

 

 

2.      Are you sitting with your hips and legs touching the back of your chair?

 

 

3.      Is the chair backrest height adjusted to provide maximum support for your back?

 

 

4.      Do your legs dangle when you sit?

 

 

5.      Do you feel pressure on the back of your thighs?

 

 

6.      Do you have/or need a footrest to adjust for height?

 

 

7.      If you have armrest, do they allow you to rest your arms comfortably?

 

 

8.      Is the size of your seat long and wide enough to support your hips and thighs?

 

 

9.      Is your chair comfortable and are you sitting in a relaxed position?

 

 

General Techniques

1.      Do you take brief stretch breaks from keying during the day?

 

 

2.      Do you avoid cradling the telephone between your head and shoulder when talking or listening to others?
