Honors Program, General Information

Volunteer State Community College | Division of Academic Affairs


The Honors Program offers:

  • An enhanced academic record
  • Opportunities to interact with other students with high academic standards
  • Small classes to ensure individualized attention
  • A strong academic program

ELEGIBILITY

New students need:

  • an ACT composite score of 24 or higher
  • a high school GPA of 3.5 or a place in the top 10% of your class
  • two letters of recommendation from high school teachers

Retuning students need:

  • 15 semester hours of collegiate course work
  • a GPA of 3.5 or above
  • recommendations from two Vol State faculty members

HONORS CLASSES

The Honors Program allows you to take challenging classes that are designed especially for the Honors student.  Courses currently offered in the Honors Program include: PSY101, COM100, combination courses in American Literature and American History (ENG2110/HIST2010 and ENG2120/HIST2020), POL200, BIOL1040, and HUM275. The Honors Program curriculum is currently being updated to fit current student needs. Honors Contract courses are also offered.

REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from the Honors Program requires completion of 15 hours of Honors designated courses including the Humanities 275 course on Leadership. Honors Program students must maintain a GPA of 3.5. They are required to attend meetings called by the Honors Director during the semester. They may also be asked to attend regional Honors conferences, prepare and present Honors Topics for faculty and students, and undertake community service projects

THE REWARDS

In addition to fostering your desire to learn, Vol State offers special recognition to you at graduation with an Honors Graduate certificate, an Honors Medallion to wear with your graduation gown, and designated “Honors” courses on your transcript.
