The basic format for a Works Cited page entry for a magazine, journal, or newspaper article, is listed below. See the samples for the appropriate punctuation.

  • Author’s name

  • Title of the article

  • Name of the journal or magazine

  • Volume number

  • Issue number

  • Date of publication

  • Page numbers

Author’s last name, Author’s first name. "Title of the article." Title of the periodical Volume number. Issue number (year):      page numbers.

Note: For magazines and newspapers, the volume and issue numbers are replaced with the date; begin with the day, followed by the month, and then the year - e.g., 10 Jan. 2004.

Magazine Article:
Fredriksen, Paula. "The Gospel According to Mel Gibson." The New Republic 28 July 2004: 25-29.

Newspaper Article:
Edwards, Holly. "Musicians' Last Weeks Rocky, Friends Recall." The Tennessean [Nashville] 26 Oct. 2003: 1A+.

Note: When the title of the newspaper does not include the city of publication, place the city of publication in brackets following the newspaper title. Use a "+" to indicate that the article continues on another page.

Journal Article:
Bell, James H. "When Hard Questions Are Asked: Evaluating Writing Centers." The Writing Center Journal 21.1 (2000):      7-28.
