The basic skills of math, science and language are more essential to master than ever before in society. There are situations where a relatively easy subject becomes difficult due to an unfamiliar context. This situation is common to any student, regardless of educational level. To help with these challenges, Volunteer State has developed several learning resources to help you master the fundamentals that are essential to learning any subject or any course.
Computer Lab
Volunteer State Community College currently has 47 academic computer labs both on and off campus. These labs contain nearly eight hundred state of the art computers and incorporate the latest software. There are several open lab areas that students may visit to complete their assignments or check their student email or online course. The college has several specialized labs in the Library including Paralegal, Research, etc. Some of these labs are specialized for Biology, Chemistry, Foreign Languages, Reading & Writing, Health Information Technologies, Sonography, New Skills and Commercial Music.
Language Lab
The Language Center is available for all students seeking help with writing, including the following areas:
- Thesis, focus and development of ideas in writing
- Organization and unity in writing
- Style and diction in writing
- Grammar, punctuation, and mechanics
- Proofreading techniques
- MLA, APA or Chicago documentation style

Math and Science Lab
The Math and Science Lab is a place where you can go to get tutorial assistance for many of the math and science classes at VSCC. We have a staff of trained tutors selected from among the student body, along with graduates and almost graduates. We also have video and computer tutorials for selected classes. The bulk of our duties is assisting those who have come to a stalemate while working homework problems. And get this: We can help you with word problems. So, if math has gotten you down, cheer up and see us. You can find us in room W125 of the Warf building (#15 on the map) on the main campus in Gallatin, Tennessee. Just remember to sign in and leave your food and beverages in the hall.
NewSkills Program
NewSkills is a computer-based instructional program available in reading, writing, basic math, and algebra designed to meet the needs of college and high school students, community members, and business and industry.
NewSkills is for college students who have developmental requirements through ACT placement or college entrance exam placement. High school students who are preparing to take the ACT, TCAP, and Gateway exams & anyone in business and industry or the community who wishes to improve basic skills in reading, writing, and math.
Testing Center
The Testing Center, a part of the division of Student Services, is located in the Wood Campus Center (#2 on the map) and houses a facility that can provide testing for up to fifty (50) examinees. The Center has a Director, Secretary, part time Test Center Supervisor and GED Examiner, and several part time screeners and test proctors.
Tutoring Services
The Office of Disability Services at Volunteer State Community College provides tutoring for ALL students, not just students with disabilities. All tutoring is provided between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday on the Gallatin campus. Tutoring may not be available for all courses or for all time slots. To request a tutor please visit the Office of Disability Services located on the ground floor of the Wood Campus Center room 108 (#2 on the map).
