Thigpen Library, Learning Outcomes For Class Instruction

Volunteer State Community College | Division of Academic Affairs

Students who complete library instruction will know how to:

  • identify the type of information needed to accomplish their purpose.
  • use the Volunteer State Community College Library website from the Library and remote locations to locate information about specific services and resources.
  • identify the differences among information sources, including the various formats in which information may be found.
  • develop and implement in appropriate databases a search strategy by identifying topic keywords, synonyms and related terms.
  • identify the difference between a circulating book, a reference book, and a reserve book and locate each type in the library.
  • search the online catalog by author, title, subject and keyword to locate a book or audiovisual material to determine if it is available.
  • use available services to obtain needed off campus materials.
  • locate an electronic book, check it out and cite it.
  • identify and use general information sources to increase familiarity with a particular topic.
  • distinguish between a popular magazine and a journal.
  • use Boolean Logic when developing a search.
  • distinguish between a library electronic database and the Internet.
  • select and search the appropriate electronic resources to locate periodical articles.
  • identify when and how to use the Web for research and evaluate the accuracy, authority, objectivity and currency of the information found.
  • know how to obtain assistance when needed.

And thereby, gain a greater comfort level when using the library and its resources.
