The Library of Congress Classification System

We shelve our books in the General and Reference Collections based on the Library of Congress Classification System. The main classification, or broad topic, areas are listed below. Topics are assigned additional letters within each area, for example the call number for a book on Mathematics will begin with QA.

Materials on a specific topic may be found in more than one classification area. Consult the catalog to locate books and other materials on a specific subject. If you want to browse the shelves, ask at the Reference Desk for more information about where to look.

To learn more about the Library of Congress Classification system, go to The Library of Congress Classification Outline on the Library of Congress website.
