What is a college placement exam?
An exam which determines a student's preparedness to enroll in college level courses.
Who takes the placement exam?
Those students entering the college who are under 21 years of age will placed in courses based on ACT scores. However, if the student has not participated in ACT-National testing and does not wish to take the ACT-Residual at that time or a student wishes to challenge ACT scores, he/she may be placed with the college's placement test and will be placed accordingly.
What placement exam does Volunteer State Community College give?
Volunteer State Community College administers the ASSET, which covers reading, writing, and math.

Can I prepare for the ASSET?
Any student can utilize the NewSkills Center to upgrade and review the basic skills necessary toÊperform well on the examination. Students areÊgiven an assessment to determine areas ofÊstrength. A computerized study program isÊdesigned according to this assessment.

What if I don't performÊwell on the college placement exam?
Students may attend NewSkills to prepare forÊa retest of the placement exam.
Where is NewSkills located?
NewSkills is located in theÊRamer Administration Building. NewSkillsÊis also offered in the Computer Lab at theÊLivingston Center.
When is NewSkills offered?
Main Campus:
Mon. - Thurs. 8 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Friday 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Saturday 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
