Conduct

Library patrons are citizens of the local, state and national governments and of the academic community and are, therefore, expected to conduct themselves as law-abiding members of each community at all times. In accordance with the VSCC Student Handbook, any individual or group behavior which is abusive, obscene, lewd, indecent, violent, excessively noisy, disorderly, or which unreasonably disturbs other groups in individuals may be subject to discipline.

Noise Policy

This policy provides for the control of noise in the library, with the purpose of providing suitable environments for individual and group study, research and public service activities. Cooperation with this policy acknowledges and supports the need of others for quiet..

  1. A certain amount of noise can be expected at spaces adjacent to staff work areas and all public service desks where library staff are helping library users. These areas include Reference, Circulation, and the computer lab assistant's desk on the first floor and the College @ Home desk on the second floor.
  2. Staff and library users, including people going to and from meetings and classes held in the Library, are expected to minimize their noise so as not to disturb others who may be studying nearby.
  3. Conversations should be kept to a minimum. When talking is necessary, voices should be kept low.
  4. Radios, CD players and similar devices should not be used without personal earphones.
  5. On the second floor of the library, quiet study areas may be found around the book stacks. Those who need quiet are encouraged to use these areas. A laptop computer may be checked out at the Circulation Desk for use on the second floor.
  6. On the second floor of the library, group study rooms are available for group work. Those who wish to work together are encouraged to use the group study rooms. Because these rooms are not soundproof, people using these rooms should speak in a low voice. Keys to the rooms may be checked out at the College @ Home Desk on the second floor. A laptop computer may be checked out at the Circulation Desk for use in the study rooms.
  7. Cellular phones should be turned off and beepers set to vibrate. Cellular phone conversations are restricted to areas outside the library, such as the lobby and restrooms.
  8. Doors to the Jim Moore Conference Room, study rooms, classrooms and offices should be closed when meetings, classes, etc. are in session.
  9. Problems should be brought to the attention of the library staff. Those library users who fail to comply with the policy may be asked to leave the library facility

Study Room Policy

Study rooms are available for group study. An individual may use a room if there is no group needing it. An individual may be asked to surrender the room in the event a group needs it..

Responsibility of Study Room Users

  • Please observe the library's food/drink policy.
  • Be careful to keep voices low; rooms are not soundproof.
  • Please discard trash and clean up messes before exiting.

These policies have been developed with input from various constituencies and have evolved through experience. Your cooperation with these policies and your consideration of your fellow users are greatly appreciated..
