Chestnut Tree Research earns grant for Volunteer State

Because of Professor Joe Schibig's continuing research and field work with the American Chestnut Society, monies through Mammoth Cave National Park are available to support the work of two students in Professor Schibig's field work next summer. This work will inventory trees in Mammoth Cave National Park and update the growing data base of statistical information cataloging surviving American Chestnut trees in the southeast. Building on summer research projects during summer 2003 and summer 2004, VSCC garnered opportunity for continuing significant contributions to the growing data base with this new funding stream. Professor Schibig has an article entitled "The American Chestnut Still Lives in Tennessee" which appears in the Sept.- October 2004 edition of The Tennessee Conservationist magazine which has a circulation of 130,000.
