New Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dr. Michael Torrence has joined Volunteer State Community College as assistant vice president for Academic Affairs. Torrence comes from Lehigh Carbon Community College in Pennsylvania, where he was associate dean of educational support services and associate dean of academics. Prior to Lehigh Carbon, he served as assistant dean of students and as assistant professor of Education at Keystone College, also in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Torrence has a PhD in Exceptional Learning from Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville. He holds a master's degree and a bachelor's degree, both in English, from South Dakota State University. He served in the Air Force as a Senior Airman, before attending college. In his role at Vol State, Torrence will work directly with students, faculty and administration to further college academic goals and ensure classroom excellence. He replaces Jim Hiett, who retired recently after more than 30 years of service.
