Sumner and Macon High School Equivalency Graduation at Vol State
Last year, Volunteer State Community College took over management of the Sumner County and Macon County High School Equivalency programs. On Thursday night, graduates from the program celebrated. Thirty-five people took part in the graduation ceremony at Vol State. One-hundred and eighty-one will receive their high school equivalency diploma this school year.
“It feels great to finally get my GED,” said class valedictorian, Nicole Hanback of Portland. “I haven’t been in school for eight or nine years.”
“I finally got it done,” said Imelda Garcia of White House, the class salutatorian. “I want to set an example for my kids.”
Overall, the High School Equivalency program at Vol State served 916 students, up from the previous year. The program offers 28 classes throughout Sumner and Macon County, including day, evening and Saturday options. Vol State also has English Literacy/Civics education (EL/Civics) courses for speakers of other languages. EL/Civics combines English language learning with information about the United States government and American society. The college took on the programs to serve the community and provide a direct pathway for education.
“I hope now you have each had a taste of success,” said Vol State president, Dr. Jerry Faulkner. “I hope that you will continue your education. I understand that 18 of you have already enrolled at Vol State.”
“This courageous group of graduates make a very tough phone call. They decided to make their education a priority,” said graduation speaker, Marva Doremus, director of Tennessee Adult Education.
The High School Equivalency and EL Civics programs are free. The Sumner Adult Education offices are located on the Vol State campus at 1480 Nashville Pike in Gallatin in 300 building on the East side of campus. The phone number is 230-3621.
