VSCC Admissions Programs of Study - Non-Degree Seeking Students

Volunteer State Community College | Student Services Division

If you are a non-high school graduate, you must be 21 years of age or older to enroll or your high school class must have graduated. If you are a high school graduate (or have earned a GED diploma) there is no age restriction.

In order to enroll you will need to:

  • Submit an Application for Admission to VSCC

  • Submit a $10 nonrefundable application fee

  • Show competency in the specific subject area in which you are interested in enrolling.  If you are registering for a course that has a prerequisite of  college-level math, reading, or writing skills, you will be required to submit acceptable ACT scores in the specific subject area (scores of 19 or above) or be given the ACT Compass exam for the course you are taking. You may not enroll if you place at the developmental level in an area that has a college-level skill requirement for the course in which you want to enroll.  See our Testing FAQ for additional information on the web about the testing process.

  • If a course you wish to take has prerequisite requirements, you must provided transcripts showing coursework from another institution  to meet the prerequisite requirement or complete the prerequisite at Volunteer State.

Students who wish to take courses for personal enrichment or professional growth may continue to accumulate credit as a non-degree-seeking student for up to forty-eight (48) semester hours. Exceptions to this maximum may be granted by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Becoming Degree-seeking

You will need to fill out a Change of Major form in the Admissions and Records Office for reclassification as a degree-seeking student.  The change will be effective at the beginning of the next regularly scheduled semester.  You will need to follow the same procedures and meet the same standards as required for all other applicants for regular admission to the College. The credits which have been earned as a non-degree-seeking student may be counted toward a degree at Vol State.
