How to Sign up for Classes at Volunteer State Community College For Non-native Speakers of English

Use this checklist for registering for classes.  When you complete a step, check it off the list.

___Step 1. Fill out Application for Admission form if you are a new student. (If you have been here before, but you left for a semester or more, you will need to fill out a Re-application form). You may apply online at the VSCC website.

___Step 2. Pay  the $10.00 application fee to the Admissions Office in the Ramer Bldg. or online. You pay this fee only one time.

___Step 3. Take entrance and placement exams given by Counseling & Testing in the Randy and Lois Wood Campus Center Building in room 213. (Stop by C 210 for directions to find the testing room).

Take ESOL version of the COMPASS exam for Reading , Grammar, Listening.  Take the Writing prompt, a 25 minutes writing on a  specific subject.  If you need to take the math test, ask for math placement test. (If you took the ACT and scored 19 or above in English and Reading , you do not need to take the ESOL COMPASS.  You will start at English 1010).

___Step 4. Take the scores of your placement exams to one of the ESOL advisors, or contact the advisor by e-mail:

Dr. Sanchez, Ramer Bldg., 149, Ms. McLean, Ramer 165, Ms. Chanin, Ramer 125, Ms. Vandiver, Ramer 148.  This advisor can tell you what classes you need, according to scores.  He/she will prepare your computer screen so that you can register for classes. 

___Step 5. Register by PRIDE online or in person at the VSCC campus. 

___Step 6. Go to the Business Office and pay for your classes, technology and activity fees, if you have not paid for them.  Or you may pay for classes online by credit card.  You may pay fees by cash, check, or credit card.

Check to make sure on what day classes begin.  The bookstore is in the Randy and Lois Wood Campus Center Bldg. You may order books online through the bookstore. The Financial Aid office is in the basement of that building.
