DISTANCE EDUCATION LIBRARY SERVICES

The mission of the Library includes furnishing informational resources in support of our instructional programs and providing research resources in support of students, faculty, administration, and staff needs.  This mission is accomplished off-campus in a variety of ways:

If you are an RODP student and VSCC is your home institution, you are able to access all VSCC library services at www.volstate.edu/library.  If you need assistance or have questions, please contact a Reference Librarian at librarian@volstate.edu or phone (615)230-3405.

If you are an RODP student and your home institution is another TBR school, you can:

Access InfoTrac and other library resources through the Tennessee Virtual Library.

If you need passwords for access to online resources at VSCC or from the Tennessee Virtual Library,  you may obtain the current passwords from your RODP course instructor.

Have books and articles delivered to you from any TBR library (See Tennessee Virtual Library Document Delivery)

Get a TALC card to use books from other Tennessee academic libraries (including VSCC) by contacting your home institution's library.

Remote access to electronic resources:

Remote access to electronic resources is available through the library web page.  If your home institution is a TBR school other than VSCC, contact your RODP instructor for remote password information.  E-Resources are accessible through the EZ Home Access link on the E-Resources web page at  http://www.volstate.edu/library/eresouces.

Online Catalog – Locate books and audiovisuals in the collection through author, title, subject, and keyword searches.  The library Web page offers remote access to the Online Catalog from home or office.  To learn how to obtain resources from the VSCC collection, see the description of Document Delivery printed lower on this page.

InfoTrac Access to multiple databases with information on a variety of topics, available to all citizens of Tennessee through the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL).  Many full-text articles are provided.  Full descriptions of databases may be found at each Web site.  In addition to others, specific resources include:

Expanded Academic ASAP - covers all academic disciplines; it provides indexing,  articles citations, and many full text articles.

General Business File International - provides much full text access to business research reports, trade publications, newspapers, journals and directory listings.

Computer Database - includes computer-related product introductions, news and reviews in areas such as hardware, software, electronics, engineering, communications and the application of technology.

Health Reference Center - Academic  - contains information on Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, Alcohol and Drug abuse, HMOs, Prescription Drugs, and other health topics.  The material contained in this database is intended for informational purposes only.

Contemporary Literary Criticism - critical essays on contemporary authors and their works.

ProQuest Research Library – Periodical database indexes 8000 periodicals, many with full text.

America's Newspapers -  A full-text newspaper collection which provides articles from the electronic editions of 21 newspapers including The Tennessean (1999-current) and The NY Times (2000-current).

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center - provides an online library of current event topics of social issues.  Includes facts with statistics, websites and references to magazine/newspaper articles

Biography Resource Center + The Complete Marquis Who’s Who biographical information on more than one million people.  Includes full-text articles and web pages.

Contemporary Authors' bio-bibliographical guide to over 90,000 current non-technical writers.

Contemporary Literary Criticism – critical essays on contemporary authors and their works.

Scribner's Writers Series – essays providing information about authors from around the world.

Literature Resource Center – biographies, critical analyses of authors and their works.

Literature Online - searchable library of more than 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama and prose, plus biographies, bibliographies and key criticism and reference resources.

Discovering Collection – In-depth reference content for the core curriculum areas of Literature, History, Biographies, Science, and Social Studies.

Health and Wellness Resource Center – information from encyclopedias, directories, medical dictionary, and periodicals on topics in health, medicine, medications, and wellness.

Reference Assistance – A reference librarian is available by phone at (615)230-4505 [during VSCC library hours], fax (615)230-3410, or e-mail librarian@volstate.edu

E-Books - An academic collection of 50,000 + full text electronic books (e-books) are now available to VSCC Library users.  A representative sampling of all academic subject areas are included in the netLibrary e-Book collection.  The Safari Tech Books Online information retrieval service is a collection of ready-reference resources, with simultaneous searching of over 130 recently published IT titles for quick answers.  The Safari materials cover computer science, media technology, office systems technology, web technology and much more.  If needed, call the Gallatin campus reference desk for information on accessing these e-book collections. 

Document Delivery – Books and periodical articles may be requested from the VSCC library collection or through Interlibrary Loan from other libraries (See Tennessee Virtual Library Document Delivery).

Cooperating Libraries:

TBR/UT Libraries - An agreement among members of TALC (Tennessee Academic Library  Collaborative) provides reciprocal library privileges among the participating TBR/UT Libraries.  All currently registered students and currently employed faculty and staff members are eligible for a TBR/UT Borrower's Card.  Once issued, this card permits checkout of circulating materials at participating libraries subject to the rules and regulations of the lending library.  For further information, contact a VSCC reference librarian/
