Volunter State Community College was founded in 1971. The college had an annual unduplicated headcount in 2010-2011 of 12,351 students with faculty and staff totaling 800.

Notables

• Vol State received TBR initial funding approval, and began a community fund raising campaign, to build a new Allied Health building on the Gallatin campus, featuring: an anatomy and physiology lab, tiered classrooms, three simulation labs and two monitored computer labs.
• Vol State has signed dual admissions agreements with Tennessee State University and Austin Peay State University.
• The Veterinary Technology AAS degree is one of few in the state of Tennessee, and the only program of its kind our service area.
• Professional musicians are partnering with Vol State on a number of bluegrass classes in Continuing Education. The college also holds jam sessions on campus for musicians and fans.
