Volunter State Community College was founded in 1971. The college had an annual unduplicated headcount in 2010-2011 of 12,351 students with faculty and staff totaling 800.

Volunteer State Community College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award the Associate Degree and certificates. Volunteer State holds membership in the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges, the Southern Association of Junior Colleges, and the Tennessee College Association.
Notables
- Vol State received TBR initial funding approval, and began a community fund raising campaign, to build a new Allied Health building on the Gallatin campus, featuring: an anatomy and physiology lab, tiered classrooms, three simulation labs and two monitored computer labs.
- Vol State has signed dual admissions agreements with Tennessee State University and Austin Peay State University.
- The Veterinary Technology AAS degree is one of few in the state of Tennessee, and the only program of its kind our service area.
- Professional musicians are partnering with Vol State on a number of bluegrass classes in Continuing Education. The college also holds jam sessions on campus for musicians and fans.
