Students can speed up their college work by taking summer courses. High school graduating seniors, current college students and new students can all benefit. Summer classes start soon at Volunteer State Community College and registration is open now.

There are dozens of summer classes in many subject areas to choose from and they come in a couple of different versions. Some classes run for the entire summer from May 29 to August 8. Other classes run for the first five weeks, from May 29 to June 30. There is also a second five-week version from July 5 to August 8. Summer classes are offered online and in hybrid formats, which combine online work with traditional classroom meetings. It's all designed to increase flexibility for the summer student, allowing them to work college in with job, family and fun.

A fun twist to the English 1010 course happens this summer. Instructor Cynthia Chanin will be using the New York Times best seller, The Other Wes Moore, instead of a traditional textbook. This book recounts the story of two young men with the same name from the same neighborhood, but one ends up a Rhodes Scholar and the other in prison for life for murder. Most of the writing assignments for the course will come from the book.

While there are many summer courses that fulfill general education requirements, there are also classes that can help save a life. CPR and First Aid is being offered during the first five weeks of the summer sessions. Students can earn certification by the American Heart Association for two years.

Visit www.volstate.edu/schedule for the summer class schedules and www.volstate.edu/admissions for information on how to apply and register. New students will need to fill out an application, which can be done online. Students can also visit the Admissions Office in person at the Ramer Building on the Vol State campus at 1480 Nashville Pike in Gallatin or call 615-230-3688.
