Submitted on January 15, 2013 at 9:17 AM

John Salley was the first NBA basketball player to take the court with three different championship-winning teams. The television host and actor has moved into a different arena recently, advocating a vegan lifestyle and speaking out as an animal rights activist. He brings his unique insight and experience to Volunteer State Community College on January 23 to speak for Vol State Unity Day. Each year Vol State celebrates Unity Day to keep the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. alive.

Salley is perhaps best known for his role on the Detroit Pistons in the 1980s, as they took two championship titles. He played with Michael Jordan on the Chicago Bulls 1996 championship team and finished his career with the Lakers during their championship-winning seasons of 1999 and 2000. He holds four NBA championship rings. After retiring from basketball, Salley, appeared in films, including "Bad Boys 1 and 2" and "Confessions of a Shopoholic". Salley co-hosted the Emmy nominated "The Best Damn Sports Show Period" on Fox Sports Net for seven years. He runs his own production company called John Salley Presents.

John Salley will speak at 12:30 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. in the Wemyss Auditorium in Caudill Hall on the college campus at 1480 Nashville Pike in Gallatin. After each engagement he will be signing books. Refreshments will be served at the evening appearance. The events are free and open to everyone. For more information call 615-230-3461.
