It's time to get ready for fall classes at Volunteer State Community College at Highland Crest in Springfield. The college has an event that can help everyone- from those who are ready to apply to those who are just considering college for the first time. The Bluegrass and Barbecue event on Thursday, June 27 will be a fun way to get started. The purpose is to show prospective students of all ages what Vol State has to offer at the Highland Crest college campus. There will be information about free academic support services, programs and classes, clubs and organizations. And as the name implies, there will also be plenty of live bluegrass music and barbecue.

New students will need to apply to the college. That can be done online at or in-person at the campus. The Bluegrass and Barbecue Celebration will be held on Thursday, June 27 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the Highland Crest campus at 150 Laureate Avenue. It is free and open to everyone. Call 433-7030 for more information. Vol State at Highland Crest offers college classes that can be used to enter a particular career field or to transfer to university. For a map to campus, visit
