ACT National
  • All students can obtain information and must register for the ACT National by going to the website www.actstudent.org.
Career Interest Inventory Tests
  • The Testing Center administers several different career interest tests based on recommendations from advisor/counselors.
  • Students should contact the Advising Center to speak with an advisor/counselor to determine which test best meets their needs.
CCE (Computer Competency Exam)
  • The Center schedules and administers the CCE exam, which is designed to prove computer literacy. Computer literacy is a graduation requirement for all degrees not requiring CIS 100, Computer Technology and Applications.
  • The exam is 60 minutes in length, and the students will know their scores immediately after completion.
  • A passing score on the exam is 70% correct.

Challenge Testing
  • Any student electing to challenge original placement must have approval from appropriate personnel before attempting to do so. The preferred method for those students 21 years of age and older is referral to Learning Commons. If the student is 20 years of age and below, he/she may speak with an advisor in the Advising Center to obtain approval.
  • All students are charged $10.00 per challenge test.
  • The writing sample must be graded by English faculty and the turnaround time is at least 24 hours. Testing personnel manually score the math tests and feedback immediately follows the testing session.
  • A student challenging original Reading placement given by ACT or ASSET will take the COMPASS Reading test.
CLEP (College Level Examination Program)
  • CLEP is used to grant credit for certain college level courses.
  • Students must call and schedule an appointment through the Testing Office at (615) 230 - 3484.
  • The fee for CLEP testing beginning July 1, 2012 will be $80 which payable by credit card on the computer on the day of the exam. An additional $25.00 institutional fee must be paid to Vol State. The student should arrive approximately 15 minutes prior to the testing session in order to pay the additional fee. The fee must be paid and receipted in the Testing Office and the receipt taken to the Testing Center before testing.
  • If more information on the CLEP exam is desired, go to the website www.collegeboard.com/clep. Please confirm with the college you are transferring CLEP scores to in order to be aware of their policy and which CLEP exams they will accept for credit.
COMPASS (college’s placement exam)
  • The COMPASS placement exam is used for those degree-seeking students who are 21 years of age and older and have never attended college.
  • The COMPASS placement exam is used for those transfer students who are 21 years of age and older and have attended another college but need to be placed in either the English and/or Math areas.
  • Appointments are required. Students must have completed a VSCC admissions application and received the college’s Welcome Packet before scheduling to take the COMPASS exam.
  • The online exam consists of three sections: Writing, Reading, and Math.
  • This exam is untimed and is given to the student free of charge. The exam is scored immediately following the testing session, and the student will be referred to the Advising Center for interpretation of score results.

Correspondence Exams
  • The Testing Center will proctor exams for students taking correspondence courses through another college or university. Student must contact the Testing Office at (615) 230 - 3484 to make arrangements.
  • There is a charge of $25 per test administered for this service.
ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages)
  • ESOL students must speak with an ESOL advisor before testing.
  • The Michigan English Placement Test is given to students indicating that English is not their native language. If the results of the Michigan test indicate proficiency, they will then takethe COMPASS placement test and placed accordingly.
Foreign Language Placement Testing
  • The Foreign Language Placement Test determines at what level of a foreign language a student should begin.
  • The test is also used for those enrolled in French or Spanish classes to determine if they have been placed correctly.
  • The test is a computerized multiple-choice exam.
  • Schedule the exam by contacting the Testing Office at (615) 230 - 3484.
HSE (High School Equivalency) Test
  • Applications for the HSE Test are available at local county Adult Education Offices, in the Testing Office in the Wood Campus Center, Room 210, or by calling (615) 230 - 3626.
  • All applicants must complete the Official Practice Test through their local Adult Education Office before taking the test.
  • The fee for the HSE test is $65.00. Effective July 1, 2012 the exam fee will be $75 for the full exam ($15 per retake). Applicants must complete an application and submit a copy of a valid drivers license (or other government-issued photo id) and the original report of the practice test results.
  • The HSE test is given at least twice monthly, but seats fill quickly, so applications need to be submitted well in advance.
  • Results of the HSE Test are available three to four weeks after testing.
Graduate Exit Exams
  • The ETS Proficiency Profile is required of all students graduating from Volunteer State Community College with an Associate of Science, Associate of Arts, or an Associate of Applied Science degree. Students graduating from Volunteer State with a Technical Certificate are not required to take the exit exam.
  • This exam is not pass/fail but is used to determine general academic knowledge that would have been taught in general education courses. Students are encouraged to do their best because their performance will affect funding and future students of the college.
  • To schedule an appointment for the ETS Proficiency Profile, graduates must go to the Testing Center Scheduling System and follow the directions to reserve a time to take the exam. You will need to create an account in which you can change your appointment, if needed, and also receive email reminders of your appointment time.
  • Students completing the General Business Administration degree must also take the GBA Exit Exam. Students completing the Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies must take the Paralegal Exit Exam.
International Codes Council (Building Codes) Exam

Vol State is an ICC exam site. All registration and scheduling for the exam needs to be processed through ICC, Inc. at (888) 422 - 7233 or online at www.iccsafe.org.

Makeup Exams for Faculty
  • For students who miss an exam in an enrolled course, the instructor may contact the Testing Office to set up a time for a make-up exam to be given.
  • The instructor is responsible for completing a Testing Transmittal Form that should accompany the copy of the exam and is responsible for dropping off and picking up the exam in the Testing Office. All exams are kept in a vault until the student arrives to take them and are returned to the secure area until the instructor retrieves them.
Regents Online Exams

In certain cases, Regents Online classes require that some of the tests be proctored. Please check each course syllabus carefully the first day you log in to determine if the midterm and/or final exam is to be proctored. If so, you must go through the Scheduling System Log In link (also found on the left side of this page). Once there:

  1. Create an account or log in to your account
  2. Click on “Regents Online scheduling”
  3. Make your appointment for mid-term and/or final exams
  4. You will receive a confirmation email of your appointment time
  5. You will also receive an email reminder of your appointment two days prior to your appointment
