Medical Laboratory Technology Program

About the Profession

The Medical Laboratory Technician is an essential member of the health care team, performing laboratory tests used in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of disease, and the maintenance of health. In fact, 80% of all medical decisions are based on laboratory results. Medical Laboratory Technicians are as dedicated to patients’ health as are doctors and nurses, though their direct contact is limited. Medical Laboratory Technicians play an important role in collecting the information needed to give the best care to an ill or injured patient.

Medical Laboratory Technicians perform general tests in all laboratory areas including:

  • Blood Bank
  • Chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Immunology
  • Microbiology
  • Urinalysis

This is an ideal career for individuals who enjoy limited patient contact, the security of job skills, and the possibility of advancement. Medical Laboratory Technicians are problem solvers. They must be skilled, accurate, and dedicated. In addition to examining specimens through a microscope, Medical Laboratory Technicians also search for data on a patient’s health by operating complex electronic equipment, computers, and precision instruments. The skills that Medical Laboratory Technicians possess make them employable in a number of environments including hospital laboratories, private clinics, research labs, vet labs, industry, forensic studies, and public health facilities.
