Vol State alumnus Antwon Bailey has a habit of creating "firsts". He was the first student debater at Vol State and the first African-American honors student. However, he is certainly not the first student to be inspired in a Bob Ruff history class.

"He demands critical thinking. Through the experience of arguing in a respectful way, and using critical thinking, he inspires dialogue between students. Dr. Ruff nurtured my love of history. My love of history sparked my love of politics," said Bailey. Read Antwon's story.

Children sometimes know what they want to be when they grow up, and Stephen Chmely went from a curious child wondering about science, to working on his doctorate in chemistry from Vanderbilt University.

Paul Love explored a neighborhood in Cairo, Egypt, thanks to a Fulbright Scholarship. The U.S. State Department program is designed to promote international learning with American students. Love investigated back alleys, and back yards, looking for evidence of an ancient castle. It's a long way from Volunteer State Community College, but that's where this journey started - with a passion for history kindled by a provocative professor. Read Paul's story.

Kevin Smith, 26, has worn many hats so far in his lifetime, and an Ivy League education from Princeton University may soon be added to his list of accomplishments.

"I went to Vol State for three semesters, got to play baseball, and took a couple of great classes in leadership. I took a history class that was very interesting, and I was in the honors program," he said. Read Kevin's story.
