Public Open House for New Health Sciences BuildingA state-of-the-art ultrasound center, a sleep lab and an emergency medical technician (EMT) patient simulation lab are just a few of the high-tech features for the newest Allied Health building at Volunteer State Community College. The Wallace Health Sciences Complex South is now open and the public is invited to take a look during an open house and ribbon cutting on Friday, January 31.
The $10 million facility has classrooms and labs for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Ophthalmic Technology, Sleep Diagnostics Technology, Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Ultrasound) and Medical Laboratory Technology programs. Many of those programs have been crammed into tight quarters in recent years, as Vol State has been expanding. The new building allows for better teaching facilities and for growth. It is the first time that the Sleep Diagnostics and Medical Laboratory programs have been fully housed on campus.
The new simulation labs have high-tech manikins for EMT students to practice skills. Those manikins can be programmed for normal breathing and then a push of a button can give the manikin a heart attack or trigger it to throw up. A control room allows faculty members to change the patient condition, while students respond to those needs in the lab. The Sonography center has six beds, HD monitors and state-of-the-art GE ultrasound machines, of comparable technology to those used in area hospitals. The Sleep Diagnostics lab allows students to monitor and asses volunteer patients during sleep studies. The Ophthalmic center now has dedicated eye exam rooms and four new imaging devices that take live video and photos of various aspects of the eye. New Medical Laboratory equipment includes a Biolyte electrolyte analyzer and Genesys UV/VIS spectrophotometers.
The open house will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Tours of the new facility will run from noon to 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is invited to attend. There is no RSVP required.
The Wallace South building is near the center of the Gallatin campus, across from the Thigpen Library. There will be parking available at the Library and behind the Wallace South building. Vol State is located at 1480 Nashville Pike in Gallatin. For more information about the event call 615-230-3570.
