Vol State students present the play “Electra” at the Palace Theater
Power, murder and revenge: all the elements of a serious story. “Electra” is an ancient Greek tragedy by Sophocles. Now it has been updated for modern sensibilities by Irish playwright Frank McGuiness. The new version will be presented by theater students from Volunteer State Community College in a production at the Palace Theater in Gallatin.
Electra is the daughter of Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae. The king returns home from the Trojan War only to be murdered by his wife and her lover. The killers take power and Electra is helpless to do anything about it. At least until her brother returns from exile.
The Frank McGuiness take on “Electra” is often described as a translation. It uses modern speech to help the audience better understand the story. The play is directed by Vol State Associate Professor Edmon Thomas. It will be presented on April 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. and April 6 at 2:30 p.m. All performances will he held at the Palace Theater on the square in downtown Gallatin. Donations will be accepted at the door to benefit student scholarships. For more information call 615-230-3202.
