Vol State summer classes-get ahead of the pack

Summer can be full of fun and sun, but it’s also an opportunity for students to get ahead in their education. Volunteer State Community College has offerings for everyone from high school students trying to get a jump start on college, to university students home for the summer. Classes come in three different sessions; starting on May 5 for Maymester; May 27 for the first summer session; and July 1 for the second summer session. Registration is open now.

One example is General Chemistry, which combines General Chemistry I and II in two five weeks sessions. That’s a whole year’s worth of chemistry in one summer. The same option applies to Organic Chemistry this summer. Both are taught in lecture classrooms equipped with multimedia technology and in state of the art chemistry labs.

The Maymester is a fast, intensive session which is held in less than a month. 21 classes are being offered this May. One new addition to the roster is College Algebra.

Nearly 200 classes are being offered on the main campus during the two summer main sessions. While many of these are traditional on campus classes, there are also 47 online classes and 12 hybrid classes to choose from. Hybrid classes combine the flexibility of online classes with traditional classroom teaching. For a complete list of classes and meeting times visit the Vol State website at www.volstate.edu

A good way to start a new career is with the popular Bank Teller training course which is being offered again this summer. This nationally recognized class was set up at the request of area bank presidents. Students from previous semesters are now working at banks across the area. The Bank Teller course will be offered by the Business Division on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. starting on May 27. The instructor is Ms. Fay Stubblefield, an area bank officer.

Summer can be an opportunity for new students to start college classes in a laid-back environment. College advisors are available to help new students decide which classes to take and what programs to consider. To meet with an advisor visit the Advising Center in room 174 of the Ramer building or call 615-230-3702.

New students will need to apply to the college before enrolling. The Admissions Office can help with that. They are also located in the Ramer building, next to the Advising Center. Admissions can be reached by phone at 615-230-3688.
