The position of Historic House Interpreter at the Douglass-Clark House (DCH) is a part-time, hourly position. Operated by Sumner County Tourism (SCT), the Douglass-Clark House is located in Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee, and is recognized for its role in early Sumner County history and Civil War history connection.

Job Description

The position requires flexible availability during the DCH’s operating days of Tuesdays-Saturdays and operating hours of 8:30am-4:30pm or 9:00am-5:00pm depending on the season. Availability to work Saturdays is a requirement for this position.

Job Summary:
This position directly interacts with the public and may occasionally include some additional hours not limited to the standard operating hours. The position may also require dressing in period clothing for special events. Regular duties are as follows:

1. Warmly greets visitors, provides personable tours of the DCH on a walk-in basis, and answers questions pertaining to the history of the DCH, local history, and national history. Schedules group tours and provides tours to groups as requested. Champions and promotes the study of history as a multi-faceted discipline.
2. Researches history as it relates to the DCH, Sumner County, Tennessee, and the United States, connecting it back to the DCH and other public history sites in Sumner County.
3. Upkeep historical records and historical databases connected with the DCH.
4. Assists with development of educational curriculum, programming, displays, and special events.
5. Handles, researches, records, and maintains DCH collection.
6. Maintains guest register; creates reports related to visitor attendance as requested by SCT.
7. Responds in a timely manner to inquiries about the DCH via the use of email, telephone, and other mediums as necessary.
8. Light cleaning and maintenance of the DCH including but not limited to sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, etc.
9. Retains an ample supply of tourism materials from the SCT to be distributed and promotes tourism to other Sumner County attractions and sites.
10. Responsible for opening the DCH and securely closing the DCH during one’s shift, which requires use of a security system. Also observes camera input on-site as needed.
11. Writes and edits copy for publications relating to the DCH including articles, websites, social media, blog posts, etc. Takes photographs of the DCH, its collections, and events at the DCH as needed.
12. May be responsible for handing cash and cash reconciliation.
13. May perform other tourism-related work such as maintaining databases, event calendars, websites, social media, working special events, etc.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:
Must be comfortable remaining in a stationary position for long lengths of the work shift. The position requires the ability to move about the DCH to provide tours, clean the DCH, move collections, rearrange displays, and restock brochures. Occasional use of stairs to monitor upper level of DCH and its condition. Occasionally required to lift moderately heavy objects and boxes (25-50 pounds).

Work Conditions:
Majority of work performed indoors in a climate-controlled setting. Tours of the DCH are performed in an indoor, non-climate-controlled space that can vary greatly in temperature throughout the year. Public restrooms that also serve as the restroom facilities for DCH employees are located in a separate building from the DCH and are accessible via an uncovered sidewalk.

Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires an education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school, and experience equivalent to one (1) year of full-time work interacting with the general public. Computer and digital literacy are also required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in historical research and historical writing is strongly favored, and college coursework in United States history and/or work experience in the field of Public History is preferred. Familiarity with Sumner County history, Tennessee history, and Civil War history is a plus.
