Language Center

The Language Center, in the Learning Commons, is an additional classroom resource that helps students to identify and address issues in writing or other forms of communication. The Language Center is free for all in the Vol State community; no appointment is necessary. The Language Center offers professional and peer tutors; all tutors provide one-on-one tutoring. The LC has computer-based materials for foreign language studies (Chinese, French, and Spanish) and ESOL studies. We also have materials about academic writing that students can take to use when they are unable to come to the LC.  There are, however, a few things tutors in the Language Center will not do:

  • Tutors will not write papers for students
  • Tutors will not edit papers, particularly in the absence of the student
  • Tutors will not comment on a grade, an instructor’s commentary on a particular paper, or on the instructor in general.

We help students with writing, including the following areas:

  • Generating ideas
  • Getting started
  • Thesis, focus, and development
  • Organization and unity
  • Style and diction
  • Grammar, punctuation, and mechanics
  • Proofreading techniques
  • MLA, APA, AMA, and Chicago/Turabian documentation styles
  • Spanish and French tutors available on an abbreviated schedule; contact someone in the Language Center or your foreign language teacher for more information

  • Qualified writing assistants for one-on-one tutoring
  • A computer lab with accessible computers
  • Scanner for preparing class assignments
  • Grammar handbooks and style manuals
  • English Basics and Grammar Materials and Handbooks
  • ESOL software - Rosetta Stone English
  • Foreign language software - Rosetta Stone Chinese, French, & Spanish
