What is Financial Aid?
The purpose of Student Financial Aid is to provide a comprehensive program of financial assistance to qualified students who would find it difficult or impossible to attend Volunteer State Community College without financial assistance.
Financial aid is administered in conjunction with the nationally established policy and philosophy that the student and his/her family have the primary responsibility for financing a college education. Financial assistance is designed only for filling in the gap between the family's potential resources and the student's expenses.
Who Should Apply?
Students must have a high school diploma or GED before federal or state financial aid can be awarded. Students are required to be degree seeking, with a declared major. U. S. citizens or nationals or eligible non-citizens (as outlined in the FAFSA application) who need financial assistance can apply for financial aid. The only way to determine if you're eligible to receive aid is to apply through the FAFSA application.
How to Apply...
To apply for Federal and State aid you must submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Application. You may apply on line using FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
How is Need Determined?
The financial information you and your family provide on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is analyzed by the federal processor to determine the family contribution. Family contribution is the amount that you and your family should be able to pay toward your cost of education. Need is the difference between the amount your and your family can contribute and the cost to attend the college of your choice. The primary responsibility for paying for your educational belongs to you and your family.
Cost of Attendance - Expected Family Contribution = Family Need
When to Apply?
You must apply for financial aid each academic year by completing the appropriate FAFSA application. Your financial needs may change and must be re-evaluated. April 15, is the priority date for applying for fall semester financial assistance. After this date, financial aid will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis as long as money is available. It is to your advantage to apply early.
