Student Registration

Volunteer State Community College uses a Student Management System called "Banner". Students use Banner to register for classes.

All students are given a Student User Account to access the My Vol State Portal.

Student User Account Information

Students receive a permanent Student ID and username when their admission application is processed. You can use these credentials to access the My Vol State Portal.

Facts about your Student ID and Username:

  • The Student ID number is also known as a "V" number or "User ID".
  • The Student ID number always begins with a capital "V" and is followed by eight numbers.
  • The Student ID number uniquely identifies you.
  • Always keep your Student ID number with you.
  • You can find your Student ID number in Application Management, your Vol State Acceptance Letter, on your Student ID Card issued by the college, or by calling the Records office at 615-230-3466.
  • You will likely need your Student ID number when contacting the IT Help Desk at 615-230-3302 during operating hours.

Facts about logging into the My Vol State Portal and your password/passphrase:

  • Check your personal email and follow those instructions if this is your first-time logging in. 
  • “How to log into My Vol State Student Portal” and other similar Knowledge Base articles provide more information. 
  • “How to Change Your Password/Passphrase” advises that you use your password to log into the Vol State campus network, eLearn, Degree Works, Outlook, Teams, and other systems, including Library Resources.
  • “Tips for creating a secure password/passphrases” includes that your password:
    • Is case sensitive. 
      • Pay close attention to buttons like "Caps Lock," as they can affect the new password when you enter or change it.
    • Must contain 16 characters. 
    • Must contain at least three different character categories chosen from the English uppercase alphabet, English lowercase alphabet, base-10 digits, or non-alphanumeric characters.
    • Must not contain ANY part of your name, username, or V number.
    • Must not ever be shared, written down, e-mailed to others, or reused if already used as one of your previous ten passwords.
