Spring 2026 Commencement celebrated student achievement, growth, and the journeys that brought graduates to this moment.
Ten students were named Outstanding Graduate nominees by faculty, recognizing their academic success, leadership, and commitment to helping others succeed. This year’s nominees included Willow Carden, Gabriel Cox, Caitlynn Khanthavongsay, Joanna Newberry, Charis Nichols, Keira Placek, Chelsea Taylor, John Vaughn, Helana Wade, and Cadence Zimmerman.
Each nominee reflects what makes the Vol State experience meaningful. These students showed up, put in the work, and made an impact on their classmates and campus community.
Selected by faculty vote, Cadence Zimmerman was named the 2026 Outstanding Graduate.
Zimmerman, an Honors Program student and president of Phi Theta Kappa, maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and scored in the 90th percentile or higher on multiple nationally standardized chemistry exams. Just as important, Zimmerman earned the respect of peers by showing up for others, offering guidance, and helping classmates work through challenging material.
Outside the classroom, Zimmerman led award-winning student projects, secured grant funding, and organized service initiatives, including clothing drives and a national marrow donor registration event.
This recognition highlights more than one student’s success. It reflects a community where students are supported, challenged, and empowered to reach their goals.
The Class of 2026 leaves Vol State ready to take the next step with confidence, skills, and a commitment to making a difference.
