Join us in celebrating the work of Vol State art student, Sabrina Marquez! This week, she signed the mural she designed and painted which is the first thing you see as you enter Warf, our Math and Science building on the Gallatin campus.

Daniel Craig, MPA, has been recognized in Marquis Who’s Who for his significant contributions to the nonprofit sector and education.
Vol State Alumus Named New Deputy Chief of Fire and Rescue
The Brentwood (TN) Fire and Rescue Department has appointed Derek Hyde as the new Deputy Fire Chief.
- Derek, a battalion chief with 23 years of experience, took over earlier this May.
- He earned an Associate of Applied Science in fire science from Volunteer State Community College.
- Derek holds a Bachelor of Science in political science from Middle Tennessee State University.

Meet a Humanities Student: Carolina Kelly

Please allow me to introduce you to Carolina Kelly, a second-year Communications Studies major here at Vol State. She’s originally from White House, Tenn., and is on track to graduate this May with her Associate of Science degree.
And, as of last week, she is the Tennessee Board of Regents Community College Student of the Year for 2025. We’re incredibly proud, of course, and I think you deserve to get to know her better.

Criminal Justice Student Receives Her Statesman’s Pin

It has been a busy year for Shay Dowell, a criminal justice student here at Vol State. In April, she competed in Chattanooga at the SkillsUSA State Leadership & Skills Competition, where she won a Gold Medal. Two months later, Shay went to Atlanta for the national SkillsUSA competition and finished eighth in the nation. During the fourth week in September, she had the unique opportunity to go to Washington, D.C.
