Vol State is proud to be empowering future industry leaders in healthcare.

One of those leaders is Trenton Strode, who is pursuing a career in one of the fastest-growing and most in-demand fields. Trenton was recently awarded the Tennessee Health Information Management (THIMA) scholarship to help him flourish as he pursues his A.A.S. in Health Information Management.

THIMA s a nonprofit organization that offers up to four annual scholarships and aims to support students who aspire to have occupations in the Health Information field. Required criteria include being enrolled in a Health Information Management program, like the one at Vol State, and being a member of the Tennessee Health Information Management Association.

“The Volunteer State Community College Associate of Applied Technology in Health Information Management (AAS HIM) Program helps students like Trenton succeed by combining practical healthcare industry skills, strong academic preparation, and professional development opportunities that align directly with relevant careers,” said Valerie Bowling, the program’s director. This career-readiness is vital for students who aspire to work in areas such as coding specialists and health information technicians. These HIM professionals frequently verify and protect patients' medical records as well as their health information. They are essential for daily healthcare operations and can work in a variety of settings, like hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics.

For Strode, the HIM program and THIMA scholarship have reinforced the confidence needed for completing his education and flourishing in his chosen career field while also alleviating some financial pressure.

“Vol State’s HIM program has helped me strengthen both my technical skills and the professional perspective needed to succeed in this field,” said Strode. He especially credits faculty members that are involved with the program for consistently offering guidance, stating that, “the Health Information Management faculty at Vol State have been incredibly supportive throughout my time in the program. They have helped guide my academic development while also encouraging professional growth and leadership within the HIM field.”

With recognition from his college community and professionals at THIMA, Strode feels more motivated to continue his journey in Health Information Management and Healthcare Policy. His success is commendable and serves as an inspiration for other Vol State students who want to excel in their chosen career field.
