Certificate Program Requirements

The OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Center at Vol State is one of 26 centers comprising a national network of non-profit organizations authorized by OSHA to deliver occupational safety and health training to public and private sector workers, supervisors, and employers.

OTI Education Center Programs are an essential component in OSHA's mission to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.

Specialist in Safety & Health (SSH)

A fundamental certificate program requiring just 4 OTI Education Center courses. Courses can be applied toward advanced level CSHO certification.

A minimum of 2 courses must have been taken with the OTI Education Center at Volunteer State Community College. Transfer other required courses from any OSHA Training Institute Education Center. Proof of successful course completion is required.

Certified Safety & Health Official (CSHO)

stack of safety equipmentNationally recognized professional safety and health certification requiring seven (7) core OTI Education Center courses and 2 elective courses.

A minimum of 2 courses must have been taken with the OTI Education Center at Volunteer State Community College.Transfer other required courses from any OSHA Training Institute Education Center. Proof of successful course completion is required.

Public Sector Safety & Health Fundamentals

Participants in the Public Sector Safety & Health Fundamentals Certificate Program must complete a minimum of seven (7) courses, comprised of required and elective courses, that include a minimum of 68 contact hours of training through OTI Education Center courses to earn the certificate in Public Sector Safety & Health Fundamentals. 

  • must complete the three Required Courses as listed for a minimum of 39 contact hours of training.
  • must complete a minimum of four Elective Courses from the Industry list that include a minimum of 29 contact hours of training.

Courses are transferable and may be completed at different OTI Education Centers.

Facilities Maintenance Safety Specialist (FMSS)

Nationally recognized professional safety and health certification requiring five (5) core OTI Education Center OSHA numbered courses, one (1) Related Safety & Health (RSH) course, and 1 OSHA or RSH elective course.

A minimum of 2 courses must have been taken with the OTI Education Center at Volunteer State Community College.Transfer up to 3 OSHA numbered courses from any OSHA Training Institute Education Center.Proof of successful course completion is required.
