Ryan Baker, the Executive Director of the Sumner County Museum, and Dr. Wendi Tostenson, the President of Vol State, proudly announced the launch of the Possum Hunters Record Project. This project is a centennial tribute to one of Tennessee’s most influential string bands. The announcement was made at a recent community celebration event, the Museum’s 50th Anniversary Barn Dance.
The Possum Hunters Record Project is a tribute album created by the local bluegrass group The Luggnutts, which includes two descendants of the original band members. The album will feature 13 to 14 songs that were originally performed on WSM Radio and at the Grand Ole Opry throughout the 1920s and 1930s.
The advanced recording studio at Vol State is providing equipment and utilizing the talent of students. Grammy Award-winning engineer Steve Bishir provides oversight and mentorship to the students. The project into both an educational opportunity and a preservation initiative as Vol State students engage in mixing and mastering the album.
