Vol State Celebrates Largest Commencement Ceremony in College History

Gallatin, Tennessee – May 9, 2026 –Volunteer State Community College celebrated 477 students at the Spring 2026 commencement ceremony on Saturday, marking the largest in the college’s 55-year history.

The milestone reflects not only academic achievement, but also Vol State’s deep and ongoing commitment to strengthening the communities it serves through education, workforce development, and opportunity.

The ceremony honored graduates ranging in age from 18 to 71 who completed programs across a wide range of academic and professional disciplines. Each graduate’s journey represents perseverance, resilience, and determination—many balancing coursework alongside careers, family responsibilities, military service, and personal challenges.

During her address, Vol State President Dr. Wendi Tostenson underscored both the significance of the moment and the broader impact graduates will have beyond the ceremony. “Success is not measured by title or salary. It is measured by how you use what you have learned to contribute, to serve, and to lift others,” Tostenson said, calling on graduates to carry forward a spirit of service and purpose into their communities.

She also highlighted the collective support system behind every student’s success, emphasizing the vital role of faculty, families, and peers in helping students reach this milestone.

In addition, the college presented the first-ever Patsy Lawson Teaching Excellence Award, honoring faculty who demonstrate exceptional dedication to teaching, service, and student engagement. The inaugural recipient, Dr. Ines Petrovic Garcia, was recognized for innovative instruction and a steadfast commitment to student success.

Volunteer State Community College extends its heartfelt congratulations to the Class of 2026 and looks forward to the many ways these graduates will lead, serve, and strengthen their communities in the years ahead.
